It could have been so simple: Former teacher and now alcoholic author Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson in the role of a lifetime) accepts the job of caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel in the Colorado backcountry - which, as it does every winter, has closed for the season. Seemingly easy money, a free winter vacation with his wife and child, and - on top of that - more than enough time to devote to writing his new novel....
The only trouble is that the hotel seems to lead a deeply sinister life of its own - and to harbor entirely different plans for the little family. As Jack increasingly succumbs to madness, his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and his telepathically gifted son Danny (Danny Lloyd) soon find themselves fighting for their very survival. There is really no need to waste too many words on one of the most celebrated, groundbreaking, and widely discussed titles in film history.
